I recently learned that the reason orange cats are referred to as “red” is because the concept of the color red existed first, and the concept of “orange” came later.

What we currently think of as “orange” used to be called “red” or “yellow red”.

For similar reasons, in humans we refer to people as “red heads” even though their color is closer to orange than it is to red.
